The game is running slowly.

This problem is usually caused by either:
  • Playing RuneScape from a slow computer.
  • A poor quality internet connection between your computer and our server.
  • Attempting to play RuneScape with too many graphical features activated.

To improve performance, try the following solutions:
  • Try reducing the graphical detail in the game.
On the title screen, press 'Graphics Options', and try reducing the graphical detail. For the fastest frame rate:
    1. Choose Safe Mode.
    2. Set 'Visible levels' to 'Current'.
    3. Set various other graphical effect to either 'Low' or 'Off'.

  • Make sure there aren't any other programs using your Internet connection.
Close any unnecessary software which may be running on your computer. In particular, don't try playing RuneScape at the same time as downloading files or watching Web TV as this doesn't work very well!

  • Try playing on a world in a different country.
On the game title screen press "World select" and try choosing a different world - for instance, even if you live in the US you might get a better link to our UK servers.

  • Upgrade Java.
Click here to download and install the latest version of Java.

  • Try playing at a different time of day.
You may get better performance by playing the game when the internet is quieter and the various routers across the internet aren't so overloaded.

  • Turn off Talkback in Firefox.
If you are using High Detail mode and Mozilla Firefox, you might want to turn off Talkback. This is an add-on that sends information about crashes back to Mozilla. There is a known bug with Talkback which can significantly slow down Java programs using OpenGL. Select 'Tools' from the menu, then 'Add-ons' and disable Talkback from the list.

If poor performance persists you may need to upgrade your computer or internet connection.
