Combat F.A.Q

General

Can you explain the combat triangle to me?

a) Melee fighters are weak against Magic attacks but strong against Ranged attacks.

b) Mages are weak against Ranged attacks but strong against melee attacks.

c) Rangers are weak against melee attacks but strong against Magic attacks.

The combat calculator on a fan-site said that my combat level should be higher than it is, why is this?

We have never given out the formula used to calculate a players combat level, so all the calculators found on some of our fan-sites are written using their authors 'best guess' at the formula. As a result, they are prone to some error.

Please be assured that your combat level is correct, you just need to do a little bit more work to increase it. The following skills can affect your Combat level: Attack, Defence, Constitution, Magic, Prayer, Ranged, Strength and Summoning.

When I left-click on a monster, my character does not attack it. I have to right-click and then select 'Attack'...

You cannot attack by default any character that has a red combat level; this is because they are a much higher level than you. If you really want to enter into combat with them, then you will need to right-click on them and then click 'Attack'. As you level up your character you will be able to attack tougher monsters by default.

Once I enter a fight, how long must I wait before I can log out ?

Once you enter a battle or fight with a monster or player you will have to wait 10 seconds after you stop fighting before you are able to logout.

How can I calculate my maximum hit?

Your maximum hit is based on a calculation of three things:

  • Strength - which can be affected by things such as potions
  • Weapon power
  • Strength-boosting Prayers

The exact conversion of these factors into a maximum hit is something which only our development team know, and would prefer not to give out.

Does your Defence level have any effect on the amount of Ranged or Magic damage you receive?

The Defence stat does not affect damage in any way. Your Defence level will only effect your chance to be hit in the first place.

What is the highest level a player can go up to?

A combat level of 138 is the highest level a player can achieve in RuneScape.

I never seem to hit certain monsters, even though I've got a high Attack level. Why not?

Some monsters are more vulnerable to specific forms of Attack. For example, monsters that wear thick armour or that have naturally hard skins will be far more vulnerable to crush attacks than slash attacks.
