Website Search Tips

In order to maximise the effectiveness of your search, you may find the following suggestions helpful:
  • Common words such as 'the' and 'how' will not be used in your search. The same applies for overly short words.
  • If you're getting too many results, try using the Category and Subcategory drop-down boxes to limit your search to a specific area of the website.
  • Make sure your search words are correctly spelt and avoid using abbreviations or nicknames for items (e.g. use 'abyssal', not 'abby').
  • The more criteria checkboxes you have checked, the higher the number of results you are likely to receive. If you have all of the criteria boxes checked, however, you may receive more results that are less relevant to what you are actually looking for. If you are sure what you are searching for is the title of an article, you may wish to search only the title field. The description field is the text that is displayed next to the article on a category page. The keywords field is a hidden text field that contains words that are relevant to the article. These words are added by Jagex staff members in order to make finding relevant information easier. Finally, the body field is the main text of the article - it is also the field that is displayed in the highlighted results. If a result is returned without highlighted text it means that the terms you searched for did not appear in the body of the article. If you have no criteria boxes checked, you will find NO results!
  • If you want to search for a specific phrase, you may wrap the phrase in quotation marks, e.g. "admiral pie" will find all articles that contain this exact phrase.
  • You may supply multiple phrases and multiple keywords in a single search.
  • Searches are not case sensitive.
  • The search will use the 'All' setting by default, which will only return pages containing all of the words and phrases that you supplied. If you would like a larger number of results, you might like to consider using the 'Any' search method. This will find articles containing at least one of the words or phrases you supplied.
  • You may pick words to exclude from results by pre-pending them with a minus sign. For example, if you wanted to search for the word 'runescape', but exclude the word 'pinecone' from all results, you would enter the following in the search box: "runescape -pinecone"
  • You may perform partial word searches by using the asterisk (*) symbol. For example, if you wanted to search for 'catch', 'patch' and 'batch', you could type in "*atch". You may use an asterisk at the beginning and/or end of a word. For example, typing in "*atch*" would find 'catches', 'patches' and 'batches', etc.
