Amulet of Farming
To attune your amulet of Farming to a patch, simply use it on the allotment or flower patch of your choice. If you are wearing the amulet, you will find that it 'hums' if it wants to tell you about a change in the state of your allotment or flower patch - if it has fully grown, become diseased or died. You don't have to wait for your amulet to tell you, though, as you can use the 'Rub amulet' option to check the attuned patch's state at any time. Each time either of these things happens it will use up one of the amulet's charges; to begin with, an amulet of Farming has eight charges and, when the eighth charge is used, the amulet will be destroyed.
Amulet of Nature
Once you have obtained an amulet, you can attune it to any type of Farming patch by using the amulet on the patch. If worn, the amulet will then notify you whenever your planted seeds have fully grown, become diseased or died. It may only be attuned to one patch at any one time.
Alternatively, if you want to check the progress of your patch at any time, select the 'Rub amulet' option to find out the current state of your crops.
If the attuned patch becomes diseased, the amulet of nature will allow you to teleport directly to that patch. If the amulet is in your inventory, right-click on it and choose 'Teleport'; if you are wearing it, right-click and choose 'Operate'. If you don't have any plant cure on you, the gardener near that patch will gladly sell you some.
The amulet of nature also allows you to contact the gardener at your attuned patch from anywhere in RuneScape, so that you can ask them to protect your crops remotely...say, from a bank. The cost of gardeners protecting your crops is the same as if you were asking them in person.
Finally, if you wear your amulet of nature while harvesting an allotment, your crop yield will be greater (though not quite as much as using magic secateurs, and using both does not 'stack').
Farming Magic Items
Summoning Familiars
Using the Summoning skill, you'll find that there are a few familiars that might be useful for training your Farming. Of particular note is the compost mound, who not only boosts your Farming level, but can be used as a plentiful supply of compost!
Quests that give Farming Experience
Please refer to the Farming Rewards page in the manual to see which quests give Farming experience.
Random Events
There are certain mishaps that can happen as a person spends time learning the farmer's trade - including tools breaking. These things need be no more than a minor inconvenience. Tools are easily replaced and, with simple preparation, most crops can be guarded against both disease and pests.
For a list of random events that occur when Farming, please refer to the Random Events section in the Manual.
The Jade Vine
If you have completed Back to my Roots, you will be able to grow a jade vine in a Farming patch in East Ardougne. Should you want to, you can check the vine's health to receive 1,500 Farming experience. You can also prune the vine (using a pair of secateurs), gaining 30 Farming experience for each branch you cut.
Scroll of Life
The scroll of life can be purchased from the rewards trader of Daemonheim with dungeoneering tokens. Once used, the scroll will disappear, giving you the following permanent effects:
- When harvesting a non-tree farming patch, there is a 10% chance that you will regain a number of seeds equal to the number you originally planted
- When digging up a fruit tree or normal tree patch, there is a 5% chance that you will regain the seed you originally planted
You gain the chance of regaining seeds once you have FINISHED harvesting a patch; you do not get a 10% chance for every ranarr herb you harvest from a patch, for example.
NOTE - If you harvest dead herbs, the herb seed you have a chance of receiving will be random. Sometimes, you may receive a torstol seed after harvesting a guam, for example. This only applies to dead herbs: live herbs will offer you a seed that is identical to the ones you originally planted in the patch.
If you pay a farmer to dig up a tree for you, you forfeit the chance of regaining your seed. Paying farmers to look after your plants will have no effect on your chances of receiving seeds - as long as you cut down or harvest the plant yourself, you will receive the chance of regaining the seeds. Spirit trees and kalquat trees do not give replacement seeds.
Farming Training in Dungeoneering
It is possible to train all of your skills while dungeoneering, and Farming is no exception. You can farm textiles to be made into mage gear, or you can farm food and herbs to aid you in combat. You can also gain Farming experience by completing farming skill doors.
