133cb3aa66 Generalize ownership/passing semantics to allow dsymutil to own abbreviations via unique_ptr
While still allowing CodeGen/AsmPrinter in llvm to own them using a bump
ptr allocator. (might be nice to replace the pointers there with
something that at least automatically calls their dtors, if that's
necessary/useful, rather than having it done explicitly (I think a typed
BumpPtrAllocator already does this, or maybe a unique_ptr with a custom
deleter, etc))

a23131f082 [llvm-profdata] Show hint for other mismatch errors when merging instr profdata
Missed bit of feedback from D14720.

Show the same "Make sure that all profile
data to be merged is generated from the same binary." hint for hash mismatch
and value site count mismatch as we now do for counter mismatch when merging
incompatible instrumentation profile data.

b3793fa262 Switch lto codegen to using diagnostic handlers.
This patch removes the std::string& argument from a number of C++ LTO API calls
and instead makes them use the installed diagnostic handler. This would also
improve consistency of diagnostic handling infrastructure: if an LTO client used
lto_codegen_set_diagnostic_handler() to install a custom error handler, we do
not want some error messages to go through the custom error handler, and some
other error messages to go into sLastErrorString.

91e9f5a86b [llvm-rtdyld] Don't waste cycles invalidating instruction cache.
Now that setExecutable() changed to do all the ground work to make
memory executable on the host, we can remove all (redundant) calls
to invalidate instruction cache here.

As an added bonus, this makes invalidateInstructionCache() dead
code, so it can be removed.

54701ca4c9 Use a different block id for block of metadata kind records
Summary:
There are currently two blocks with the METADATA_BLOCK id at module
scope. The first has the module-level metadata values (consisting of
some combination of METADATA_* record codes except for METADATA_KIND).
The second consists only of METADATA_KIND records. The latter is used
only in the METADATA_ATTACHMENT block within function blocks (for
metadata attached to instructions).

For ThinLTO we want to delay the parsing of module level metadata
until all functions have been imported from that module (there is some
bookkeeping used to suture it up when we read it during a post-pass).
However, we do need the METADATA_KIND records when parsing the function
body during importing, since those kinds are used as described above.

To simplify identification and parsing of just the block containing
the metadata kinds, use a different block id (METADATA_KIND_BLOCK_ID).
Support older bitcode without the new block id as well.

6548debed0 [llvm-profdata] Add check for text profile formats and improve error reporting (2nd try)
Summary:
This change addresses two possible instances of user error / confusion when
merging sampled profile data.

Previously any input that didn't match the raw or processed instrumented format
would automatically be interpreted as instrumented profile text format data.
No error would be reported during the merge.

Example:
If foo-sampled.profdata and bar-sampled.profdata are binary sampled profiles:

Old behavior:
$ llvm-profdata merge foo-sampled.profdata bar-sampled.profdata -output foobar-sampled.profdata
$ llvm-profdata show -sample foobar-sampled.profdata
error: foobar-sampled.profdata:1: Expected 'mangled_name:NUM:NUM', found lprofi

This change adds basic checks for valid input data when assuming text input.
It also makes error messages related to file format validity more specific about
the assumbed profile data type.

New behavior:
$ llvm-profdata merge foo-sampled.profdata bar-sampled.profdata -o foobar-sampled.profdata
error: foo.profdata: Unrecognized instrumentation profile encoding format
Perhaps you forgot to use the -sample option?

c13f4daa7c Add a libLTO diagnostic handler that supports lto_get_error_message API
This is a follow-up from the previous discussion on the thread:
http://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-commits/Week-of-Mon-20151019/307763.html

The LibLTO lto_get_error_message() API reads error messages from a std::string
sLastErrorString. Instead of passing this string around as an argument, this
patch creates a diagnostic handler and then sends this handler to the
constructor of LTOCodeGenerator.

de0a495c44 Fix llvm-config to adapt to the install environment.
Summary:
This patch does a couple of things:

  - Adds a new argument `--shared-mode` which accepts a list of components and prints whether or not the provided components need to be linked statically or shared.
  - Fixes `--libnames` when CMake BUILD_SHARED_LIBS is used.
  - Fixes `--libnames`, `--libs`, and `--libfiles` for dylib when static components aren't installed.
  - Fixes `--libnames`, `--libs`, `--libfiles`, and `--components` to use LLVM_DYLIB_COMPONENTS as the component manifest for dylib linking.
  - Uses the host platform's usual convention for filename extensions and such, instead of always defaulting to Unix-izms.

Because I don't own a Mac, I am not able to test the Mac platform dependent stuff locally. If someone would be willing to run a build for me on their machine (unless there's a better option), I'd appreciate it.

b0714e5bf7 [bugpoint] Add a named metadata (+their operands) reducer
Summary:
We frequently run bugpoint on a linked module that consists of all
modules we create while jitting the julia standard library. This module
has a very large number of compile units (10000+) in `llvm.dbg.cu`,
which didn't get reduced at all, requiring manual post processing.
This is an attempt to have bugpoint go through and attempt to reduce
the number of global named metadata nodes as well as their operands,
to cut down the number of roots for such metadata.

8994e20f69 Reapply r250906 with many suggested updates from Rafael Espindola.
The needed lld matching changes to be submitted immediately next,
but this revision will cause lld failures with this alone which is expected.

This removes the eating of the error in Archive::Child::getSize() when the characters
in the size field in the archive header for the member is not a number. To do this we
have all of the needed methods return ErrorOr to push them up until we get out of lib.
Then the tools and can handle the error in whatever way is appropriate for that tool.

So the solution is to plumb all the ErrorOr stuff through everything that touches archives.
This include its iterators as one can create an Archive object but the first or any other
Child object may fail to be created due to a bad size field in its header.

Thanks to Lang Hames on the changes making child_iterator contain an
ErrorOr<Child> instead of a Child and the needed changes to ErrorOr.h to add
operator overloading for * and -> .

We don’t want to use llvm_unreachable() as it calls abort() and is produces a “crash”
and using report_fatal_error() to move the error checking will cause the program to
stop, neither of which are really correct in library code. There are still some uses of
these that should be cleaned up in this library code for other than the size field.

The test cases use archives with text files so one can see the non-digit character,
in this case a ‘%’, in the size field.

These changes will require corresponding changes to the lld project. That will be
committed immediately after this change. But this revision will cause lld failures
with this alone which is expected.

c127f2db5e [CMake] Bug 25059 - CMake libllvm.so.$MAJOR.$MINOR shared object name not compatible with ldconfig
Summary:
This change makes the CMake build system generate libraries for Linux and Darwin matching the makefile build system.

Linux libraries follow the pattern lib${name}.${MAJOR}.${MINOR}.so so that ldconfig won't pick it up incorrectly.

Darwin libraries are not versioned.

Note: On linux the non-versioned symlink is generated at install-time not build time. I plan to fix that eventually, but I expect that is good enough for the purposes of fixing this bug.

9c18b9c83d llvm-config: Add --has-rtti option
Summary:
This prints NO if LLVM was built with -fno-rtti or an equivalent flag
and YES otherwise. The reasons to add -has-rtti rather than adding -fno-rtti
to --cxxflags are:

1. Building LLVM with -fno-rtti does not always mean that client
applications need this flag.

2. Some compilers have a different flag for disabling rtti, and the
compiler being used to build LLVM may not be the compiler being used to
build the application.

2) For cross-process JITs, it allows resolver blocks and trampolines to be

For CloudABI's toolchain I have a symlink that goes from <target>-ar and
<target>-ranlib to LLVM's ar binary, to mimick GNU Binutils' naming
scheme. The problem is that if we're targetting ARM64, the name of the
ranlib executable is aarch64-unknown-cloudabi-ranlib. This already
contains the string "ar".

Let's move the "ranlib" test above the "ar" test. It's not that likely
that we're going to see operating systems or harwdare architectures that
are called "ranlib".

Summary:
We've had a lot of discussion in the past about the meaningful and useful default behaviors for the llvm-shlib tool. The original implementation was heavily geared toward Apple's use, and I think that was wrong. This patch seeks to correct that.

I've removed the LLVM_DYLIB_EXPORT_ALL variable and made libLLVM export everything by default.

I've also added a new target that is only built on Darwin for libLLVM-C as a library that re-exports the LLVM-C API. This library is not built on Linux because ELF doesn't support re-export libraries in the same way MachO does.

5bbc793788 Add an (optional) identification block in the bitcode
Processing bitcode from a different LLVM version can lead to
unexpected behavior. The LLVM project guarantees autoupdating
bitcode from a previous minor revision for the same major, but
can't make any promise when reading bitcode generated from a
either a non-released LLVM, a vendor toolchain, or a "future"
LLVM release. This patch aims at being more user-friendly and
allows a bitcode produce to emit an optional block at the
beginning of the bitcode that will contains an opaque string
intended to describe the bitcode producer information. The
bitcode reader will dump this information alongside any error it
reports.

The optional block also includes an "epoch" number, monotonically
increasing when incompatible changes are made to the bitcode. The
reader will reject bitcode whose epoch is different from the one
expected.

bcb0d035e4 This removes the eating of the error in Archive::Child::getSize() when the characters
in the size field in the archive header for the member is not a number.

Thanks to Lang Hames on the changes making child_iterator contain an
ErrorOr<Child> instead of a Child and the needed changes to ErrorOr.h to add
operator overloading for * and -> .

We don’t want to use llvm_unreachable() as it calls abort() and is produces a “crash”
and using report_fatal_error() to move the error checking will cause the program to
stop, neither of which are really correct in library code. There are still some uses of
these that should be cleaned up in this library code for other than the size field.

Also corrected the code where the size gets us to the “at the end of the archive”
which is OK but past the end of the archive will return object_error::parse_failed now.

The test cases use archives with text files so one can see the non-digit character,
in this case a ‘%’, in the size field.

4bba9adcc4 [Orc] Add support for emitting indirect stubs directly into the JIT target's
memory, rather than representing the stubs in IR. Update the CompileOnDemand
layer to use this functionality.

Directly emitting stubs is much cheaper than building them in IR and codegen'ing
them (see below). It also plays well with remote JITing - stubs can be emitted
directly in the target process, rather than having to send them over the wire.

The downsides are:

(1) Care must be taken when resolving symbols, as stub symbols are held in a
separate symbol table. This is only a problem for layer writers and other
people using this API directly. The CompileOnDemand layer hides this detail.

(2) Aliases of function stubs can't be symbolic any more (since there's no
symbol definition in IR), but must be converted into a constant pointer
expression. This means that modules containing aliases of stubs cannot be
cached. In practice this is unlikely to be a problem: There's no benefit to
    caching such a module anyway.

On balance I think the extra performance is more than worth the trade-offs: In a
simple stress test with 10000 dummy functions requiring stubs and a single
executed "hello world" main function, directly emitting stubs reduced user time
for JITing / executing by over 90% (1.5s for IR stubs vs 0.1s for direct
emission).

llvm-nm only needs the target to parse module level assembly in bitcode. It doesn't need a disassembler or codegen.

llvm-objdump needs to be able to disassemble a file, but doesn't need asm parsers or codegen.

This reduces the sizes of these tools by a few MB each, depending on how many backends are linked in.

d35f4170f8 Fix two bugs in llvm-objdump’s printing of Objective-C meta data
from malformed Mach-O files that caused crashes.

We recently got about 700 malformed Mach-O files which we have
been using the improve the robustness of tools that deal with reading
data from object files. These resulted in about 20 small bug fixes to
the darwin based tools.

The goal here is to also improve the robustness of llvm-objdump and
this is the first two fixes. In talking with Tim Northover the approach
we thought might be best is to:

1) Only include tests for the malformed Mach-O files that cause crashes
(not all 700+ tests).
2) The test should only contain the command line option that caused the
crash and not all the others that don’t matter.
3) There should be only one line for the FileCheck that is past the point
of the crash if possible and if possible indicates the malformation.

Again the goal is to fix crashes and not so much care about how the
printing of malformed data comes out.

Tim also suggested if we really wanted to add test cases for all 700+
malformed Mach-O files putting them in the regression tests might be
an option. But many of these do not cause crashes.

The first customer is ThinLTO, however the data structures are designed
and named more generally based on prior feedback. There are a few
comments regarding how certain interfaces are used by ThinLTO, and the
options added here to gold currently have ThinLTO-specific names as the
behavior they provoke is currently ThinLTO-specific.

This patch includes support for generating per-module function indexes,
the combined index file via the gold plugin, and several tests
(more are included with the associated clang patch D11908).

matching a particular pattern. These filters can even be combined
with exclude filters. Include-only filters are given priority, so
that first the set of items to display is limited only to those that
match the include filters, and then the set of exclude filters is
applied to those. If there are no include filters specified, then
it means "display everything".

cae4b3b956 Restore "Function bitcode index in Value Symbol Table and lazy reading support"
This reverts commit r247898 (which reverted r247894).

Patch fixed to address two issues exposed by buildbots:
- unused variable warning in NDEBUG mode
- std::initializer_list lifetime issue causing test failures

Original Summary:
Support for including the function bitcode indices in the Value Symbol
Table. This requires writing the VST after the function blocks, which in
turn requires a new VST forward declaration record encoding the offset of
the full VST (which is backpatched to contain the offset after the VST
is written).

This patch also enables the lazy function reader to use the new function
indices out of the VST. This support will be used by ThinLTO as well, which
will be in a follow on patch. Backwards compatibility with older bitcode
files is maintained.

A new test is also included.

The bitcode format (used for the lazy reader as well as the upcoming
ThinLTO patches) came out of discussions with Duncan and others and is
described here:

c2011f0a8c LTO: Disable extra verify runs in release builds
The verifier currently runs three times in LTO: (1) after parsing, (2)
at the beginning of the optimization pipeline, and (3) at the end of it.

The first run is important, since we're not sure where the bitcode comes
from and it's nice to validate it, but in release builds the extra runs
aren't appropriate.

This commit:
  - Allows these runs to be disabled in LTOCodeGenerator.
  - Adds command-line options to llvm-lto.
  - Adds command-line options to libLTO.dylib, and disables the verifier
by default in release builds (based on NDEBUG).

This shaves about 3.5% off the runtime of ld64 when linking
verify-uselistorder with -flto -g.

Summary:
This is the first patch in the series to migrate Triple's (which are ambiguous)
to TargetTuple's (which aren't).

For the moment, TargetTuple simply passes all requests to the Triple object it
holds. Once it has replaced Triple, it will start to implement the interface in
a more suitable way.

This change makes some changes to the public C++ API. In particular,
InitMCSubtargetInfo(), createMCRelocationInfo(), and createMCSymbolizer()
now take TargetTuples instead of Triples. The other public C++ API's have
been left as-is for the moment to reduce patch size.

This commit also contains a trivial patch to clang to account for the C++ API
change. Thanks go to Pavel Labath for fixing LLDB for me.

fe6b559032 [cmake] rework LLVM_LINK_LLVM_DYLIB option handling
Summary:
This diff attempts to address the concerns raised in
http://reviews.llvm.org/D12488.

We introduce a new USE_SHARED option to llvm_config,
which, if set, causes the target to be linked against
libLLVM.

add_llvm_utility now uniformly disables linking against
libLLVM. These utilities are not intended for distribution,
and this keeps the option handling more centralised.

llvm-shlib is now processes before any other "tools"
subdirectories, ensuring the libLLVM target is defined
before its dependents.

One main difference from what was requested: llvm_config
does not prune LLVM_DYLIB_COMPONENTS from the components
passed into explicit_llvm_config. This is because the "all"
component does something special, adding additional
libraries (namely libLTO). Adding the component libraries
after libLLVM should not be a problem, as symbols will be
resolved in libLLVM first.

Finally, I'm not really happy with the
DISABLE_LLVM_LINK_LLVM option, but I'm not sure of a
better way to get the following:
 - link all tools and shared libraries to libLLVM if
   LLVM_LINK_LLVM_DYLIB is set
 - some way of explicitly *not* doing so for utilities
   and libLLVM itself
Suggestions for improvement here are particularly welcome.

bce9d857cc [WinEH] Add cleanupendpad instruction
Summary:
Add a `cleanupendpad` instruction, used to mark exceptional exits out of
cleanups (for languages/targets that can abort a cleanup with another
exception). The `cleanupendpad` instruction is similar to the `catchendpad`
instruction in that it is an EH pad which is the target of unwind edges in
the handler and which itself has an unwind edge to the next EH action.
The `cleanupendpad` instruction, similar to `cleanupret` has a `cleanuppad`
argument indicating which cleanup it exits. The unwind successors of a
`cleanuppad`'s `cleanupendpad`s must agree with each other and with its
`cleanupret`s.

Update WinEHPrepare (and docs/tests) to accomodate `cleanupendpad`.

52e45a3b66 Reapply r246012 [dsymutil] Emit real dSYM companion binaries.
With a fix for big endian machines. Thanks to Daniel Sanders for the debugging!

Original commit message:

The binaries containing the linked DWARF generated by dsymutil are not
standard relocatable object files like emitted did previsously. They should be
dSYM companion files, which means they have a different file type in the
header, but also a couple other peculiarities:
 - they contain the segments and sections from the original binary in their
load commands, but not the actual contents. This means they get an address
and a size, but their offset is always 0 (but these are not virtual sections)
 - they also conatin all the defined symbols from the original binary

This makes MC a really bad fit to emit these kind of binaries. The approach
that was used in this patch is to leverage MC's section layout for the
debug sections, but to use a replacement for MachObjectWriter that lives
in MachOUtils.cpp. Some of the low-level helpers from MachObjectWriter
were reused too.

55390f2377 Enable linking tools, shared libraries against libLLVM
Summary:
Three closely related changes, to have a mode in which we link all
executables and shared libraries against libLLVM.

1. Add a new LLVM_LINK_LLVM_DYLIB cmake option, which, when ON, will link
executables and shared libraries against libLLVM. For this to work, it
is necessary to also set LLVM_BUILD_LLVM_DYLIB and LLVM_DYLIB_EXPORT_ALL.

It is not strictly necessary to set LLVM_DISABLE_LLVM_DYLIB_ATEXIT, but
we also default to OFF in this mode, or tools tend to misbehave (e.g.
stdout may not flush on exit when output is buffered.)

llvm-config and Tablegen do not use libLLVM, as they are dependencies of
   libLLVM.

2. Modify llvm-go to take a new flag, "linkmode=component-libs|dylib".
Depending on which one is passed (default is component-libs), we link
with the individual libraries or libLLVM respectively. We pass in dylib
   when LLVM_LINK_LLVM_DYLIB is ON.

3. Fix LLVM_DYLIB_EXPORT_ALL on Linux, and expand the symbols exported to
actually export all. Don't strip leading underscore from symbols on Linux,
and make sure we get all exported symbols and weak-with-default symbols
("W" in nm output). Without these changes, passes won't load because
the "Annotate..." symbols defined in lib/Support/Valigrind.cpp are not
   found.

Testing:
 - Ran default build ("ninja") with LLVM, clang, compiler-rt, llgo, lldb.
 - Ran "check", "check-clang", "check-tsan", "check-libgo" targets. I've
never had much success with LLDB tests, and llgoi is currently broken
so check-llgo fails for an unrelated reason.
 - Ran "lldb" to ensure it loads.

c9db4d6473 Build a lib/Fuzzer version for llvm-as.
Summary:
This CL is associated with a fuzzing effort to find bugs in LLVM. The
first step is to fuzz llvm-as to find potential issues in generating
IR. Both afl-fuzz and LLVM's lib/Fuzzer are being used.

This CL introduces the executable that implements the in-process
fuzzer using LLVM's lib/Fuzzer. The motivation for using lib/Fuzzer is
based on time comparisons between afl-fuzz and lib/Fuzzer. Early
results show that per-process, the lib/Fuzzer implemenation of llvm-as
(i.e. this CL) generates over 30 times the number of mutations found
by afl-fuzz, per hour runtime. The speedup is due to the removal of
overhead of forking a process, and loading the executable into memory.

I placed this under the tools directory, since it is an executable. It
is also only conditionally built if (using cmake) the flag
LLVM_USEE_SANITIZE_COVERAGE is used, so that it isn't built by
default.

96b0ffdce8 TransformUtils: Introduce module splitter.
The module splitter splits a module into linkable partitions. It will
be used to implement parallel LTO code generation.

This initial version of the splitter does not attempt to deal with the
somewhat subtle symbol visibility issues around module splitting. These
will be dealt with in a future change.

bf271cc4e6 [PM/AA] Remove the last relics of the separate IPA library from LLVM,
folding the code into the main Analysis library.

There already wasn't much of a distinction between Analysis and IPA.
A number of the passes in Analysis are actually IPA passes, and there
doesn't seem to be any advantage to separating them.

Moreover, it makes it hard to have interactions between analyses that
are both local and interprocedural. In trying to make the Alias Analysis
infrastructure work with the new pass manager, it becomes particularly
awkward to navigate this split.

I've tried to find all the places where we referenced this, but I may
have missed some. I have also adjusted the C API to continue to be
equivalently functional after this change.

a1024936aa [CMake] Fix PR14200, llvm-config output misses -fno-rtti
This change adds RTTI and Exception flags to llvm-config's cxxflags. This solution is a minimal patch to solve the issue, and is recommended for the 3.7 release branch. Tom Stellard's outstanding work is the longer term solution.

9267630cbc Remove and forbid raw_svector_ostream::flush() calls.
After r244870 flush() will only compare two null pointers and return,
doing nothing but wasting run time. The call is not required any more
as the stream and its SmallString are always in sync.

d1fc658396 Don't iterate over all sections in the ELFFile constructor.
With this we finally have an ELFFile that is O(1) to construct. This is helpful
for programs like lld which have to do their own section walk.
