Basic Staves
It is worth noting that, as these staves are intended for beginners, there are no requirements to wield them.
Even if you are starting out, you can still have an unlimited supply of certain runes through use of an elemental staff. Please remember the type of staff it is represents what runes you will NOT need (i.e. Staff of fire requires no fire runes)

Battlestaves
Battlestaves are stronger than normal staves, giving good bonuses so the staff can be used as a melee weapon. However, you will need 30 Attack and 30 Magic to wield any battlestaff. Please remember the type of staff it is represents what runes you will NOT need (i.e. Fire battlestaff requires no fire runes).

Mystic Staves
If you would prefer to upgrade your battlestaff, you may wish to visit Thormac the Sorceror after completion of the Scorpion Catcher quest.
For 40,000 gold pieces, Thormac will upgrade your staff to 'mystic', which also means your Attack and Magic levels must be 40 to wield. Please remember the type of staff it is represents what runes you will NOT need (i.e. Mystic fire staff requires no fire runes).

The God Staves
Each requiring 60 Magic to wield, god staves can be used to unlock the associated god spells in the Mage Arena. Each staff can cast the associated god spell.

Slayer Staff
When you have level 50 Magic and 55 Slayer, you will be able to unleash 'Magic dart', which can only be cast from a Slayer staff or a staff of light. Not only can the dart hit up to 190 points of damage, but it can be used to kill monsters such as turoths and kurask.

* Adds 15% to any magic damage you cause while wielding the staff. The staff of light also classes as a Slayer staff, so can be used to cast the Magic Dart spell. Its special attack grants the wielder some serious protection from melee attacks for a short time. Finally, there is a 1/8 chance that any combat spell cast with this staff will not use up any runes.
Quest Related Staves
Caitlin's staff: | Caitlin's staff is one of the rewards from The Blood Pact. It is a useful weapon for those new to the Magic skill. |
The Dramen Staff: | The Dramen Staff requires 31 Crafting to make and is made during the Lost City quest, and will transport you to Zanaris. |
Iban Staff | After successfully completing Underground Pass, you will have access to the Iban Staff and be able to cast the level 50 Magic spell 'Iban blast'. This devastating spell can inflict up to 250 points of damage. You need an Attack level of 50 to wield the Iban Staff. |
Ancient Staff | For those who have completed Desert Treasure and have Magic and Attack levels of 50, the Ancient Staff can be used. Adds 10% to any magic damage you cause while wielding the staff. |
Ahrim's staff | Hidden away in the dark regions of RuneScape is an area named the Barrows. Ahrim is the mage brother and his staff - which requires 70 Attack and Magic - will help any mage on the road to power. In a complete set of Ahrim's armour, the passive special 'Blighted Aura' is activated. Adds 10% to any magic damage you cause while wielding the staff. |
Toktz-mej-tal | Found in the Tzhaar city, the Toktz-mej-tal requires Magic and Attack levels of 60 to use. |

The mages' book and Magic wands can be obtained as a reward from the Mage Training Arena by swapping points gained within the arena.

Gravite and Chaotic Staves
Gravite and chaotic staves start at 20% charge. A fully recharged gravite or chaotic staff will last 10 hours in combat before it breaks. Once these charges have been used up, the staff can be recharged, for a fee, by the rewards trader. To do so, right-click on him, and select 'Recharge' with the depleted staff in your inventory.
There are two methods of recharging: cash, or a combination of cash and dungeoneering tokens. A cash repair will cost you up to 2 million gp (for a staff with no charge at all). A combination of cash and tokens will cost you up to 200,000 gp and a number of dungeoneering tokens (for a staff with no charge at all).
