Hunter - Bird Snaring (Level 1+)

Bird Snaring

Setting up a bird snare
Bird snaring is a part of the Hunter skill that is suitable for the less-experienced, requiring a bird snare, available from the Hunter stores of Yanille and Nardah. These wooden contraptions look like simple perches for birds to land on. However, the weight of the bird on the lightweight perch will cause it to drop away and a small loop of wire to close around the bird's feet.

A bird snare should be laid in an area with many birds circling above for maximum results - a good place to start would be the crimson swifts that circle the coast east of the Feldip Jungle. Once caught, a bird will leave feathers that can be used when Fletching or even for catching the fabled 'rainbow fish'.

This trap can be smoked with a torch to remove your scent, increasing your chance of success when bird snaring. To do so you will need a torch, bought from the Hunter stores of Yanille and Nardah, and a Hunter level of 39 or above. Lighting the torch and using it on a set-up bird trap will greatly increase the chance of snagging yourself a reward.

Additionally, being camouflaged will help to remove your scent and make you blend in to your surroundings; when in the correct area, of course. Wearing suitable camouflage gear, garnered from the fur of tracking and pitfall creatures and made into costume sets by the fancy dress shop owner in Varrock, will make it more likely that you are successful when bird snaring. A complete set of the suitable gear (woodland camo-top and camo-trousers when in woodland, for example) will increase those chances even further.

Only so many bird snare traps can be laid at one point, depending on your Hunter level:

Hunter level Maximum Traps
1 - 19 [Image: Hunter] One trap at a time
20 - 39 [Image: Hunter] Two traps at a time
40 - 59 [Image: Hunter] Three traps at a time
60 - 79 [Image: Hunter] Four traps at a time
80 - 99 [Image: Hunter] Five traps at a time

If you have reached your maximum number of traps then one will have to be dismantled before another can be laid. It is also possible to wait for a trap to dismantle itself, which will happen after a length of time.

Locations

For maps and detailed locations of the bird snare creatures for Hunter, visit the Hunter - Locations page.

Bird snare creatures can be found at each of the four Hunter areas around RuneScape: Cerulean twitches at the Rellekka and Trollweiss Hunter area, north of Rellekka; the copper longtail at the Piscatoris Hunter area, just north of the Gnome Stronghold; the tropical wagtail and crimson swift in the Feldip Jungle, just south of the Feldip Hills and Gu'Tanoth; and the golden warbler, who takes up residence in the Uzer Hunter area, just south-east of the Shantay Pass.

The crimson swift, unlike the tropical wagtail, strays towards the sea on the east coast of the Feldip Jungle.

Creatures

These birds can be snared with the use of the bird snare (available from all good Hunter stores).

Creature Rewards

The feathery rewards from trapping birds may not look substantial, but can be sold to shops or others for a substantial fee, or used when Fletching.

The feathers of the tropical wagtail will also enable you to fish for the elusive rainbow fish, at any fly-fishing spot.
