Summary:
Now DISubroutineType has a 'cc' field which should be a DW_CC_ enum. If
it is present and non-zero, the backend will emit it as a
DW_AT_calling_convention attribute. On the CodeView side, we translate
it to the appropriate enum for the LF_PROCEDURE record.
I added a new LLVM vendor specific enum to the list of DWARF calling
conventions. DWARF does not appear to attempt to standardize these, so I
assume it's OK to do this until we coordinate with GCC on how to emit
vectorcall convention functions.

Eliminate DITypeIdentifierMap and make DITypeRef a thin wrapper around
DIType*. It is no longer legal to refer to a DICompositeType by its
'identifier:', and DIBuilder no longer retains all types with an
'identifier:' automatically.
Aside from the bitcode upgrade, this is mainly removing logic to resolve
an MDString-based reference to an actualy DIType. The commits leading
up to this have made the implicit type map in DICompileUnit's
'retainedTypes:' field superfluous.
This does not remove DITypeRef, DIScopeRef, DINodeRef, and
DITypeRefArray, or stop using them in DI-related metadata. Although as
of this commit they aren't serving a useful purpose, there are patchces
under review to reuse them for CodeView support.
The tests in LLVM were updated with deref-typerefs.sh, which is attached
to the thread "[RFC] Lazy-loading of debug info metadata":

llvm-svn: 267004
Add a new method, DICompositeType::buildODRType, that will create or
mutate the DICompositeType for a given ODR identifier, and use it in
LLParser and BitcodeReader instead of DICompositeType::getODRType.
The logic is as follows:
- If there's no node, create one with the given arguments.
- Else, if the current node is a forward declaration and the new
arguments would create a definition, mutate the node to match the
new arguments.
- Else, return the old node.
This adds a missing feature supported by the current DITypeIdentifierMap
(which I'm slowly making redudant). The only remaining difference is
that the DITypeIdentifierMap has a "the-last-one-wins" rule, whereas
DICompositeType::buildODRType has a "the-first-one-wins" rule.
For now I'm leaving behind DICompositeType::getODRType since it has
obvious, low-level semantics that are convenient for unit testing.
llvm-svn: 266786
Lift the API for debug info ODR type uniquing up a layer. Instead of
clients managing the map directly on the LLVMContext, add a static
method to DICompositeType called getODRType and handle the map in the
background. Also adds DICompositeType::getODRTypeIfExists, so far just
for convenience in the unit tests.
This simplifies the logic in LLParser and BitcodeReader. Because of
argument spam there are actually a few more lines of code now; I'll see
if I come up with a reasonable way to clean that up.
llvm-svn: 266742
This significantly contributes to peak memory usage during a
LTO Release+DebugInfo build of clang. In my profile the peak usage
is around 164MB before this change and ~130MB after.
llvm-svn: 266509
Currently each Function points to a DISubprogram and DISubprogram has a
scope field. For member functions the scope is a DICompositeType. DIScopes
point to the DICompileUnit to facilitate type uniquing.
Distinct DISubprograms (with isDefinition: true) are not part of the type
hierarchy and cannot be uniqued. This change removes the subprograms
list from DICompileUnit and instead adds a pointer to the owning compile
unit to distinct DISubprograms. This would make it easy for ThinLTO to
strip unneeded DISubprograms and their transitively referenced debug info.
Motivation
----------
Materializing DISubprograms is currently the most expensive operation when
doing a ThinLTO build of clang.
We want the DISubprogram to be stored in a separate Bitcode block (or the
same block as the function body) so we can avoid having to expensively
deserialize all DISubprograms together with the global metadata. If a
function has been inlined into another subprogram we need to store a
reference the block containing the inlined subprogram.
Attached to https://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=27284 is a python script
that updates LLVM IR testcases to the new format.

A DISubprogram on x86_64 was 48 bytes. During an LTO build we
end up allocating *a lot* of these (see Duncan's numbers on
llvm-dev and/or my numbers in the review link).
This change reduces the size to 40 bytes, with a nice effect
on peak memory usage when LTO'ing clang.
There are more classes in the hierarchy which can be compacted
so more patches will come. DISubprogram was the biggest offender
in my profiling, anyway.

This mostly cosmetic patch moves the DebugEmissionKind enum from DIBuilder
into DICompileUnit. DIBuilder is not the right place for this enum to live
in — a metadata consumer should not have to include DIBuilder.h.
I also added a Verifier check that checks that the emission kind of a
DICompileUnit is actually legal.

Introduced DIMacro and DIMacroFile debug info metadata in the LLVM IR to support macros.

llvm-svn: 255245
This is needed to support linking of module-level metadata as a
postpass after function importing, where we will be leaving temporary
metadata on imported instructions until the postpass metadata import.
Also added unittest. Split from D14838.
llvm-svn: 254914
Previously, subprograms contained a metadata reference to the function they
described. Because most clients need to get or set a subprogram for a given
function rather than the other way around, this created unneeded inefficiency.
For example, many passes needed to call the function llvm::makeSubprogramMap()
to build a mapping from functions to subprograms, and the IR linker needed to
fix up function references in a way that caused quadratic complexity in the IR
linking phase of LTO.
This change reverses the direction of the edge by storing the subprogram as
function-level metadata and removing DISubprogram's function field.
Since this is an IR change, a bitcode upgrade has been provided.
Fixes PR23367. An upgrade script for textual IR for out-of-tree clients is
attached to the PR.

llvm-svn: 252219
This fixes PR24621 and matches what we do for `DILocation`. Although
the limit seems somewhat artificial, there are places in the backend
that also assume 16-bit columns, so we may as well just be consistent
about the limits.
llvm-svn: 246349
Currently the DWARF backend requires that subprograms have a type, and
the type is ignored if it has an empty type array. The long term
direction here -- see PR23079 -- is instead to skip the type entirely if
there's no valid type.
It turns out we have cases in tree of missing types on subprograms, but
since they're not referenced by compile units, the backend never crashes
on them. One option would be to add a Verifier check that subprograms
have types, and fix the bitrot. However, this is a fair bit of churn
(20-30 testcases) that would be reversed anyway by PR23079.
I found this inconsistency because of a WIP patch and upgrade script for
PR23367 that started crashing on test/DebugInfo/2010-10-01-crash.ll.
This commit updates the testcase to reference the subprogram from the
compile unit, and fixes the resulting crash (in line with the direction
of PR23079). This also updates `DIBuilder` to stop assuming a non-null
pointer for the subroutine types.
llvm-svn: 246333
Since r241097, `DIBuilder` has only created distinct `DICompileUnit`s.
The backend is liable to start relying on that (if it hasn't already),
so make uniquable `DICompileUnit`s illegal and automatically upgrade old
bitcode. This is a nice cleanup, since we can remove an unnecessary
`DenseSet` (and the associated uniquing info) from `LLVMContextImpl`.
Almost all the testcases were updated with this script:
git grep -e '= !DICompileUnit' -l -- test |
grep -v test/Bitcode |
xargs sed -i '' -e 's,= !DICompileUnit,= distinct !DICompileUnit,'
I imagine something similar should work for out-of-tree testcases.
llvm-svn: 243885
Remove the fake `DW_TAG_auto_variable` and `DW_TAG_arg_variable` tags,
using `DW_TAG_variable` in their place Stop exposing the `tag:` field at
all in the assembly format for `DILocalVariable`.
Most of the testcase updates were generated by the following sed script:
find test/ -name "*.ll" -o -name "*.mir" |
xargs grep -l 'DILocalVariable' |
xargs sed -i '' \
-e 's/tag: DW_TAG_arg_variable, //' \
-e 's/tag: DW_TAG_auto_variable, //'
There were only a handful of tests in `test/Assembly` that I needed to
update by hand.
(Note: a follow-up could change `DILocalVariable::DILocalVariable()` to
set the tag to `DW_TAG_formal_parameter` instead of `DW_TAG_variable`
(as appropriate), instead of having that logic magically in the backend
in `DbgVariable`. I've added a FIXME to that effect.)
llvm-svn: 243774
Remove unnecessary and confusing common base class for `DICompositeType`
and `DISubroutineType`.
While at a high-level `DISubroutineType` is a sort of composite of other
types, it has no shared code paths, and its fields are completely
disjoint. This relationship was left over from the old debug info
hierarchy.
llvm-svn: 243160
Remove an unnecessary (and confusing) common subclass for
`DIDerivedType` and `DICompositeType`. These classes aren't really
related, and even in the old debug info hierarchy, there was a
long-standing FIXME to separate them.
llvm-svn: 243152
This is a necessary prerequisite for bootstrapping the emission
of debug info inside modules.
- Adds a FlagExternalTypeRef to DICompositeType.
External types must have a unique identifier.
- External type references are emitted using a forward declaration
with a DW_AT_signature([DW_FORM_ref_sig8]) based on the UID.

It is meant to be used to record modules @imported by the current
compile unit, so a debugger an import the same modules to replicate this
environment before dropping into the expression evaluator.
DIModule is a sibling to DINamespace and behaves quite similarly.
In addition to the name of the module it also records the module
configuration details that are necessary to uniquely identify the module.
This includes the configuration macros (e.g., -DNDEBUG), the include path
where the module.map file is to be found, and the isysroot.
The idea is that the backend will turn this into a DW_TAG_module.

llvm-svn: 241017
so DWARF skeleton CUs can be expression in IR. A skeleton CU is a
(typically empty) DW_TAG_compile_unit that has a DW_AT_(GNU)_dwo_name and
a DW_AT_(GNU)_dwo_id attribute. It is used to refer to external debug info.
This is a prerequisite for clang module debugging as discussed in
http://lists.cs.uiuc.edu/pipermail/cfe-dev/2014-November/040076.html.
In order to refer to external types stored in split DWARF (dwo) objects,
such as clang modules, we need to emit skeleton CUs, which identify the
dwarf object (i.e., the clang module) by filename (the SplitDebugFilename)
and a hash value, the dwo_id.
This patch only contains the IR changes. The idea is that a CUs with a
non-zero dwo_id field will be emitted together with a DW_AT_GNU_dwo_name
and DW_AT_GNU_dwo_id attribute.

Finish off PR23080 by renaming the debug info IR constructs from `MD*`
to `DI*`. The last of the `DIDescriptor` classes were deleted in
r235356, and the last of the related typedefs removed in r235413, so
this has all baked for about a week.
Note: If you have out-of-tree code (like a frontend), I recommend that
you get everything compiling and tests passing with the *previous*
commit before updating to this one. It'll be easier to keep track of
what code is using the `DIDescriptor` hierarchy and what you've already
updated, and I think you're extremely unlikely to insert bugs. YMMV of
course.
Back to *this* commit: I did this using the rename-md-di-nodes.sh
upgrade script I've attached to PR23080 (both code and testcases) and
filtered through clang-format-diff.py. I edited the tests for
test/Assembler/invalid-generic-debug-node-*.ll by hand since the columns
were off-by-three. It should work on your out-of-tree testcases (and
code, if you've followed the advice in the previous paragraph).
Some of the tests are in badly named files now (e.g.,
test/Assembler/invalid-mdcompositetype-missing-tag.ll should be
'dicompositetype'); I'll come back and move the files in a follow-up
commit.
llvm-svn: 236120
Continuing PR23080, gut `DIType` and its various subclasses, leaving
behind thin wrappers around the pointer types in the new debug info
hierarchy.
llvm-svn: 235064
Remove 'inlinedAt:' from MDLocalVariable. Besides saving some memory
(variables with it seem to be single largest `Metadata` contributer to
memory usage right now in -g -flto builds), this stops optimization and
backend passes from having to change local variables.
The 'inlinedAt:' field was used by the backend in two ways:
1. To tell the backend whether and into what a variable was inlined.
2. To create a unique id for each inlined variable.
Instead, rely on the 'inlinedAt:' field of the intrinsic's `!dbg`
attachment, and change the DWARF backend to use a typedef called
`InlinedVariable` which is `std::pair<MDLocalVariable*, MDLocation*>`.
This `DebugLoc` is already passed reliably through the backend (as
verified by r234021).
This commit removes the check from r234021, but I added a new check
(that will survive) in r235048, and changed the `DIBuilder` API in
r235041 to require a `!dbg` attachment whose 'scope:` is in the same
`MDSubprogram` as the variable's.
If this breaks your out-of-tree testcases, perhaps the script I used
(mdlocalvariable-drop-inlinedat.sh) will help; I'll attach it to PR22778
in a moment.
llvm-svn: 235050
Before we start to rely on valid `!dbg` attachments, add a check to the
verifier that `@llvm.dbg.*` intrinsics always have one. Also check that
the `scope:` fields point at the same `MDSubprogram`.
This is in the context of PR22778. The check that the `inlinedAt:`
fields agree has baked for a while (since r234021), so I'll kill [1] the
`MDLocalVariable::getInlinedAt()` field soon.
[1]: http://lists.cs.uiuc.edu/pipermail/llvm-commits/Week-of-Mon-20150330/269387.html
Unfortunately, that means it's impossible to keep the current `Verifier`
checks, which rely on comparing `inlinedAt:` fields. We'll be able to
keep the checks I'm adding here.
If this breaks your out-of-tree testcases, the upgrade script
(add-dbg-to-intrinsics.sh) attached to PR22778 that I used for r235040
might fix them for you.
llvm-svn: 235048
Add a few functions from `DILexicalBlock` to `MDLexicalBlockBase`,
leaving `DILexicalBlock` a simple wrapper.
IMO, the new functions (`getLine()` and `getColumn()`) don't really
belong in the base class, but to simplify transitioning old code it
seems like the right incremental step. I've explicitly deleted them in
`MDLexicalBlockFile`, and eventually the callers should be updated to
downcast to `MDLexicalBlock` directly and the forwarding functions
removed.
llvm-svn: 234842
Completely gut `DIExpression`, turning it into a simple wrapper around
`MDExpression *`. There are two bits of magic left:
- It's constructed from `const MDExpression*` but convertible to
`MDExpression*`.
- It's default-constructed to `nullptr`.
Otherwise, it should behave quite like a raw pointer. Once I've done
the same to the rest of the `DIDescriptor` subclasses, I'll come back to
delete them entirely (and update call sites as necessary to deal with
the missing magic).
llvm-svn: 234832
As documented in PR23200 (and the FIXMEs I've added to the code here),
this logic is fairly broken: it modifies the `LLVMContext` in a way that
affects other modules and cannot be serialized to assembly/bitcode. For
now, move it over to `MDLocation::computeNewDiscriminators()` anyway.
llvm-svn: 234825
I don't really like this function at all -- I think it should be as
simple as `return getFunction() == F` -- but for now this seems like the
best we can do.
llvm-svn: 234778
Change `MDSubprogram::getFunction()` and
`MDGlobalVariable::getConstant()` to return a `Constant`. Previously,
both returned `ConstantAsMetadata`.
llvm-svn: 234699
Continue gutting the `DIDescriptor` hierarchy. In this case, move the
guts of `DIScope::getName()` and `DIScope::getContext()` to
`MDScope::getName()` and `MDScope::getScope()`.
