2272906641 LowerSwitch: track bounding range for the condition tree.
When LowerSwitch transforms a switch instruction into a tree of ifs it
is actually performing a binary search into the various case ranges, to
see if the current value falls into one cases range of values.

So, if we have a program with something like this:

switch (a) {
case 0:
  do0();
  break;
case 1:
  do1();
  break;
case 2:
  do2();
  break;
default:
  break;
}

the code produced is something like this:

  if (a < 1) {
    if (a == 0) {
      do0();
    }
  } else {
    if (a < 2) {
      if (a == 1) {
        do1();
      }
    } else {
      if (a == 2) {
        do2();
      }
    }
  }

This code is inefficient because the check (a == 1) to execute do1() is
not needed.

The reason is that because we already checked that (a >= 1) initially by
checking that also  (a < 2) we basically already inferred that (a == 1)
without the need of an extra basic block spawned to check if actually (a
== 1).

The patch addresses this problem by keeping track of already
checked bounds in the LowerSwitch algorithm, so that when the time
arrives to produce a Leaf Block that checks the equality with the case
value / range the algorithm can decide if that block is really needed
depending on the already checked bounds .

For example, the above with "a = 1" would work like this:

the bounds start as LB: NONE , UB: NONE
as (a < 1) is emitted the bounds for the else path become LB: 1 UB:
NONE. This happens because by failing the test (a < 1) we know that the
value "a" cannot be smaller than 1 if we enter the else branch.
After the emitting the check (a < 2) the bounds in the if branch become
LB: 1 UB: 1. This is because by checking that "a" is smaller than 2 then
the upper bound becomes 2 - 1 = 1.

When it is time to emit the leaf block for "case 1:" we notice that 1
can be squeezed exactly in between the LB and UB, which means that if we
arrived to that block there is no need to emit a block that checks if (a
== 1).

ae39e54823 Canonicalize addrspacecast ConstExpr between different pointer types
As a follow-up to r210375 which canonicalizes addrspacecast
instructions, this patch canonicalizes addrspacecast constant
expressions.

Given clang uses ConstantExpr::getAddrSpaceCast to emit addrspacecast
cosntant expressions, this patch is also a step towards having the
frontend emit canonicalized addrspacecasts.

Piggyback a minor refactor in InstCombineCasts.cpp

Update three affected tests in addrspacecast-alias.ll,
access-non-generic.ll and constant-fold-gep.ll and added one new test in

c7a7a14ca1 Move GlobalMerge from Transform to CodeGen.
This patch is to move GlobalMerge pass from Transform/Scalar
to CodeGen, because GlobalMerge depends on TargetMachine.
In the mean time, the macro INITIALIZE_TM_PASS is also moved
to CodeGen/Passes.h. With this fix we can avoid making
libScalarOpts depend on libCodeGen.

55fd79efac Remove top-level Clang -fsanitize= flags for optional ASan features.
Init-order and use-after-return modes can currently be enabled
by runtime flags. use-after-scope mode is not really working at the
moment.

The only problem I see is that users won't be able to disable extra
instrumentation for init-order and use-after-scope by a top-level Clang flag.
But this instrumentation was implicitly enabled for quite a while and
we didn't hear from users hurt by it.

b9ec29d7c5 IR: add "cmpxchg weak" variant to support permitted failure.
This commit adds a weak variant of the cmpxchg operation, as described
in C++11. A cmpxchg instruction with this modifier is permitted to
fail to store, even if the comparison indicated it should.

As a result, cmpxchg instructions must return a flag indicating
success in addition to their original iN value loaded. Thus, for
uniformity *all* cmpxchg instructions now return "{ iN, i1 }". The
second flag is 1 when the store succeeded.

At the DAG level, a new ATOMIC_CMP_SWAP_WITH_SUCCESS node has been
added as the natural representation for the new cmpxchg instructions.
It is a strong cmpxchg.

By default this gets Expanded to the existing ATOMIC_CMP_SWAP during
Legalization, so existing backends should see no change in behaviour.
If they wish to deal with the enhanced node instead, they can call
setOperationAction on it. Beware: as a node with 2 results, it cannot
be selected from TableGen.

Currently, no use is made of the extra information provided in this
patch. Test updates are almost entirely adapting the input IR to the
new scheme.

Summary for out of tree users:
------------------------------

+ Legacy Bitcode files are upgraded during read.
+ Legacy assembly IR files will be invalid.
+ Front-ends must adapt to different type for "cmpxchg".
+ Backends should be unaffected by default.

b330f79c8f GVN: Enable value forwarding for calloc
Enable value forwarding for loads from `calloc()` without an intervening
store.

This change extends GVN to handle the following case:

    %1 = tail call noalias i8* @calloc(i64 1, i64 4)
    %2 = bitcast i8* %1 to i32*
    ; This load is trivially constant zero
    %3 = load i32* %2, align 4

This is analogous to the handling for `malloc()` in the same places.
`malloc()` returns `undef`; `calloc()` returns a zero value. Note that
it is correct to return zero even for out of bounds GEPs since the
result of such a GEP would be undefined.

490f50746a Fixed several correctness issues in SeparateConstOffsetFromGEP
Most issues are on mishandling s/zext.

Fixes:

1. When rebuilding new indices, s/zext should be distributed to
sub-expressions. e.g., sext(a +nsw (b +nsw 5)) = sext(a) + sext(b) + 5 but not
sext(a + b) + 5. This also affects the logic of recursively looking for a
constant offset, we need to include s/zext into the context of the searching.

2. Function find should return the bitwidth of the constant offset instead of
always sign-extending it to i64.

3. Stop shortcutting zext'ed GEP indices. LLVM conceptually sign-extends GEP
indices to pointer-size before computing the address. Therefore, gep base,
zext(a + b) != gep base, a + b

Improvements:

1. Add an optimization for splitting sext(a + b): if a + b is proven
non-negative (e.g., used as an index of an inbound GEP) and one of a, b is
non-negative, sext(a + b) = sext(a) + sext(b)

2. Function Distributable checks whether both sext and zext can be distributed
to operands of a binary operator. This helps us split zext(sext(a + b)) to
zext(sext(a) + zext(sext(b)) when a + b does not signed or unsigned overflow.

Refactoring:

Merge some common logic of handling add/sub/or in find.

Testing:

Add many tests in split-gep.ll and split-gep-and-gvn.ll to verify the changes
we made.

5def9d253a [PPC64LE] Correct vperm -> shuffle transform for little endian
As discussed in cfe commit r210279, the correct little-endian
semantics for the vec_perm Altivec interfaces are implemented by
reversing the order of the input vectors and complementing the permute
control vector. This converts the desired permute from little endian
element order into the big endian element order that the underlying
PowerPC vperm instruction uses. This is represented with a
ppc_altivec_vperm intrinsic function.

The instruction combining pass contains code to convert a
ppc_altivec_vperm intrinsic into a vector shuffle operation when the
intrinsic has a permute control vector (mask) that is a constant.
However, the vector shuffle operation assumes that vector elements are
in natural order for their endianness, so for little endian code we
will get the wrong result with the existing transformation.

This patch reverses the semantic change to vec_perm that was performed
in altivec.h by once again swapping the input operands and
complementing the permute control vector, returning the element
ordering to little endian.

The correctness of this code is tested by the new perm.c test added in
a previous patch, and by other tests in the test suite that fail
without this patch.

87cd774844 Allow alias to point to an arbitrary ConstantExpr.
This patch changes GlobalAlias to point to an arbitrary ConstantExpr and it is
up to MC (or the system assembler) to decide if that expression is valid or not.

This reduces our ability to diagnose invalid uses and how early we can spot
them, but it also lets us do things like

@test5 = alias inttoptr(i32 sub (i32 ptrtoint (i32* @test2 to i32),
                                 i32 ptrtoint (i32* @bar to i32)) to i32*)

An important implication of this patch is that the notion of aliased global
doesn't exist any more. The alias has to encode the information needed to
access it in its metadata (linkage, visibility, type, etc).

Another consequence to notice is that getSection has to return a "const char *".
It could return a NullTerminatedStringRef if there was such a thing, but when
that was proposed the decision was to just uses "const char*" for that.

2ce8c2f26f Remove sanitizer blacklist from ASan/TSan/MSan function passes.
Instrumentation passes now use attributes
address_safety/thread_safety/memory_safety which are added by Clang frontend.
Clang parses the blacklist file and adds the attributes accordingly.

Currently blacklist is still used in ASan module pass to disable instrumentation
for certain global variables. We should fix this as well by collecting the
set of globals we're going to instrument in Clang and passing it to ASan
in metadata (as we already do for dynamically-initialized globals and init-order

7df1221986 Convert some X86 blendv* intrinsics into IR.
Summary:
Implemented an InstCombine transformation that takes a blendv* intrinsic
call and translates it into an IR select, if the mask is constant.

This will eventually get lowered into blends with immediates if possible,
or pblendvb (with an option to further optimize if we can transform the
pblendvb into a blend+immediate instruction, depending on the selector).
It will also enable optimizations by the IR passes, which give up on
sight of the intrinsic.

Both the transformation and the lowering of its result to asm got shiny
new tests.

The transformation is a bit convoluted because of blendvp[sd]'s
definition:

Its mask is a floating point value! This forces us to convert it and get
the highest bit. I suppose this happened because the mask has type
__m128 in Intel's intrinsic and v4sf (for blendps) in gcc's builtin.

I will send an email to llvm-dev to discuss if we want to change this or
not.

Summary:
This adds two new diagnostics: -pass-remarks-missed and
-pass-remarks-analysis. They take the same values as -pass-remarks but
are intended to be triggered in different contexts.

-pass-remarks-missed is used by LLVMContext::emitOptimizationRemarkMissed,
which passes call when they tried to apply a transformation but
couldn't.

-pass-remarks-analysis is used by LLVMContext::emitOptimizationRemarkAnalysis,
which passes call when they want to inform the user about analysis
results.

The patch also:

1- Adds support in the inliner for the two new remarks and a
   test case.

2- Moves emitOptimizationRemark* functions to the llvm namespace.

3- Adds an LLVMContext argument instead of making them member functions
   of LLVMContext.

The commit refactors how the formulae are built in order to produce such
representation.
This yields a more accurate, but still perfectible, cost model.

c5f7a8c70e Fix most of PR10367.
This patch changes the design of GlobalAlias so that it doesn't take a
ConstantExpr anymore. It now points directly to a GlobalObject, but its type is
independent of the aliasee type.

To avoid changing all alias related tests in this patches, I kept the common
syntax

@foo = alias i32* @bar

to mean the same as now. The cases that used to use cast now use the more
general syntax

@foo = alias i16, i32* @bar.

Note that GlobalAlias now behaves a bit more like GlobalVariable. We
know that its type is always a pointer, so we omit the '*'.

For the bitcode, a nice surprise is that we were writing both identical types
already, so the format change is minimal. Auto upgrade is handled by looking
through the casts and no new fields are needed for now. New bitcode will
simply have different types for Alias and Aliasee.

One last interesting point in the patch is that replaceAllUsesWith becomes
smart enough to avoid putting a ConstantExpr in the aliasee. This seems better
than checking and updating every caller.

A followup patch will delete getAliasedGlobal now that it is redundant. Another
patch will add support for an explicit offset.

f2dda46680 Teach the inliner how to preserve musttail invariants
The interesting case is what happens when you inline a musttail call
through a musttail call site. In this case, we can't break perfect
forwarding or allow any stack growth.

Instead of merging control flow from the inlined return instruction
after a musttail call into the body of the caller, leave the inlined
return instruction in the caller so that the musttail call stays in the
tail position.

More work is required in http://reviews.llvm.org/D3630 to handle the
case where the inlined function has dynamic allocas or byval arguments.

328bcb73da MergeFunctions Pass, introduced total ordering among values.
This is a third patch of patch series that improves MergeFunctions

This patch description:
Being comparing functions we need to compare values we meet at left and
right sides.
Its easy to sort things out for external values. It just should be
the same value at left and right.
But for local values (those were introduced inside function body)
we have to ensure they were introduced at exactly the same place,

d7c0e22d5f Improve 'tail' call marking in TRE. A bootstrap of clang goes from 375k calls marked tail in the IR to 470k, however this improvement does not carry into an improvement of the call/jmp ratio on x86. The most common pattern is a tail call + br to a block with nothing but a 'ret'.
The number of tail call to loop conversions remains the same (1618 by my count).

The new algorithm does a local scan over the use-def chains to identify local "alloca-derived" values, as well as points where the alloca could escape. Then, a visit over the CFG marks blocks as being before or after the allocas have escaped, and annotates the calls accordingly.

This moves most of GlobalOpt's constructor optimization
code out of GlobalOpt into Transforms/Utils/CDtorUtils.{h,cpp}. The
public interface is a single function OptimizeGlobalCtorsList() that
takes a predicate returning which constructors to remove.

GlobalOpt calls this with a function that statically evaluates all
constructors, just like it did before. This part of the change is
behavior-preserving.

Also add a call to this from GlobalDCE with a filter that removes global
constructors that contain a "ret" instruction and nothing else – this

Turns out that this was the root cause of PR19621. We found a crasher

I've confirmed that reverting this patch both fixes the reduced test

to really be rooted here. I've replied to the commit thread with
discussion of my (feeble) attempts to debug this. Didn't make it very
far, so reverting now that we have a good test case so that things can
get back to healthy while the debugging carries on.

that a blocks new address is known only when it is cloned. But e.g.

d81a0d614d Fix rampant quadratic behavior in UpdatePHINodes. The operation of
mapping from a basic block to an incoming value, either for removal or
just lookup, is linear in the number of predecessors, and we were doing
this for every entry in the 'Preds' list which is in many cases almost
all of them!

Unfortunately, the fixes are quite ugly. PHI nodes just don't make this
operation easy. The efficient way to fix this is to have a clever
'remove_if' operation on PHI nodes that lets us do a single pass over
all the incoming values of the original PHI node, extracting the ones we
care about. Then we could quickly construct the new phi node from this
list. This would remove the remaining underlying quadratic movement of
unrelated incoming values and the need for silly backwards looping to
"minimize" how often we hit the quadratic case.

This is the last obvious fix for PR19499. It shaves another 20% off the
compile time for me, and while UpdatePHINodes remains in the profile,
most of the time is now stemming from the well known inefficiencies of
LVI and jump threading.

c4071d355a [LoopStrengthReduce] Don't trim formula that uses a subset of required registers
Consider this use from the new testcase:

  LSR Use: Kind=ICmpZero, Offsets={0}, widest fixup type: i32
    reg({1000,+,-1}<nw><%for.body>)
    -3003 + reg({3,+,3}<nw><%for.body>)
    -1001 + reg({1,+,1}<nuw><nsw><%for.body>)
    -1000 + reg({0,+,1}<nw><%for.body>)
    -3000 + reg({0,+,3}<nuw><%for.body>)
    reg({-1000,+,1}<nw><%for.body>)
    reg({-3000,+,3}<nsw><%for.body>)

This is the last use we consider for a solution in SolveRecurse, so CurRegs is
a large set. (CurRegs is the set of registers that are needed by the
previously visited uses in the in-progress solution.)

ReqRegs is {
  {3,+,3}<nw><%for.body>,
  {1,+,1}<nuw><nsw><%for.body>
}

This is the intersection of the regs used by any of the formulas for the
current use and CurRegs.

Now, the code requires a formula to contain *all* these regs (the comment is
simply wrong), otherwise the formula is immediately disqualified. Obviously,
no formula for this use contains two regs so they will all get disqualified.

The fix modifies the check to allow the formula in this case. The idea is
that neither of these formulae is introducing any new registers which is the
point of this early pruning as far as I understand.

In terms of set arithmetic, we now allow formulas whose used regs are a subset
of the required regs not just the other way around.

There are few more loops in the test-suite that are now successfully LSRed. I
have benchmarked those and found very minimal change.

6f9ba6a633 [Modules] Fix potential ODR violations by sinking the DEBUG_TYPE
definition below all of the header #include lines, lib/Transforms/...
edition.

This one is tricky for two reasons. We again have a couple of passes
that define something else before the includes as well. I've sunk their
name macros with the DEBUG_TYPE.

Also, InstCombine contains headers that need DEBUG_TYPE, so now those
headers #define and #undef DEBUG_TYPE around their code, leaving them
well formed modular headers. Fixing these headers was a large motivation
for all of these changes, as "leaky" macros of this form are hard on the
modules implementation.

15c7b91ac2 [Modules] Make Support/Debug.h modular. This requires it to not change
behavior based on other files defining DEBUG_TYPE, which means it cannot
define DEBUG_TYPE at all. This is actually better IMO as it forces folks
to define relevant DEBUG_TYPEs for their files. However, it requires all
files that currently use DEBUG(...) to define a DEBUG_TYPE if they don't
already. I've updated all such files in LLVM and will do the same for
other upstream projects.

This still leaves one important change in how LLVM uses the DEBUG_TYPE
macro going forward: we need to only define the macro *after* header
files have been #include-ed. Previously, this wasn't possible because
Debug.h required the macro to be pre-defined. This commit removes that.
By defining DEBUG_TYPE after the includes two things are fixed:

- Header files that need to provide a DEBUG_TYPE for some inline code
  can do so by defining the macro before their inline code and undef-ing
  it afterward so the macro does not escape.

- We no longer have rampant ODR violations due to including headers with
  different DEBUG_TYPE definitions. This may be mostly an academic
  violation today, but with modules these types of violations are easy
  to check for and potentially very relevant.

Where necessary to suppor headers with DEBUG_TYPE, I have moved the
definitions below the includes in this commit. I plan to move the rest
of the DEBUG_TYPE macros in LLVM in subsequent commits; this one is big
enough.

The comments in Debug.h, which were hilariously out of date already,
have been updated to reflect the recommended practice going forward.

e07407deea [Modules] Sink all the DEBUG_TYPE defines for InstCombine out of the
header files and into the cpp files.

These files will require more touches as the header files actually use
DEBUG(). Eventually, I'll have to introduce a matched #define and #undef
of DEBUG_TYPE for the header files, but that comes as step N of many to
clean all of this up.

8369b857f6 [asan] instead of inserting inline instrumentation around memset/memcpy/memmove, replace the intrinsic with __asan_memset/etc. This makes the memset/etc handling more complete and consistent with what we do in msan. It may slowdown some cases (when the intrinsic was actually inlined) and speedup other cases (when it was not inlined)
